Burnt Banana's!

This past week week had some cold air blast the area and 2 nights in a row we got to around 31 degrees. We know from last year what happens to the nana's when it gets that cold. They get burnt, and this year I have banana's that are almost ready. I do not know what will come from the banana's that are still on the tree. They are still flowering but all of the leafs to the mother tree are dead. I wonder if the will be able to produce enough energy to fininsh the flowering. Here are some pictures of my burnt banana's I will try to name all the 1's I know. Thanks to the Banana Lady I have a few now that are unknown until they flower.

More Misi Luki Banana Pups

The first picture is from the May 20 post after the first round of banana pup removal. Here is a link to the original post on the removal of the Misi Luki Banana pups. Well in just 5 weeks I have 6 new pups that are now 4ft tall in this very short period. I have had this in the ground since the end of Nov. 07 At first it was getting big and not sending off any pups. Since I removed the first 4 it has exploded in growth. All of my bananas have doubled in size in the past month. All of the original bananas planted have all passed the top of the roof.

Misi Luki Banana Pup Removal Project

Back in Nov. 07 I planted a Misi Luki and Apple Banana Tree in my back yard and with a new game plan and layout for the new patio to come the trees are going to have to go. My plan is to allow the mother trees to finish growing, but I decided it was time to move the pups off of the Misi Luki tree. I have began another section of the yard for banana alley and have all of the other banana trees growing there now. And with the pups from these two banana trees I will have quite the dessert banana collection growing there.
So this was my first time removing pups from a mother tree, and I think it went pretty good. I had 4 pups that needed to be removed. Before I started I grabbed a few 3gal pots and filled them with a little potting soil. Then I took the shovel and slid it down between the pup and the mom. Then cutting it away I tried to remove as many roots as possible with each of the pups. Then I potted them up and treated them with some vitamin B1. I figured growing them in the pots for a little while will be beneficial for them in developing more roots before I replant them again. I gave one of them to Aaron from AYiFP to add to his banana collection. So here are the pictures from the project.

More Banana Tree Updates

It is amazing when you look at your plants growing everyday not much seems to happen. But you leave for a few days and it seems like they explode in new growth. When I got back from my trip there was new growth on all of the banana trees. Then the banana trees put out 2 new leaves each in just 4 days Just before I left on my trip I had 2 new pups on the Misi Luki, and 1 new pup on the Ice Cream. Now I have 2 pups coming up on the apple banana. The new pups are growing faster than any of the pups that have been there since I started on the ice cream banana. The new Ice cream pup has only been exsposed for 2 weeks and is taller and fatter than the 3 others that have been there for 5 months. Here are some different pictures of all the bananas. The first 3 are the Ice Cream banana tree, the first shot is from 4/1 and the next 2 are from 4/8 they doubled in size in a week. The next 3 are of the Misi Luki and the dates are the same. Then the next 2 are the apple banana and its new pups. The last picture is of the Williams hybrid.

Misi Luki Banana Tree

Today while watering the Misi Luki banana tree I noticed a little nub sticking from the ground. YES it is the first pup making an appearance. I have been anxiously awaiting this. This tree is much larger the the Ice Cream banana tree which already has 3 pups. My banana trees are growing so fast. Everyday I look and it seems like they keep spitting out new leafs. Here is the shot of the pup, and a shot of the new leaf that just finished opening today.

Banana Update

Here is some updated banana shots. First my freakin lawn man came through with the weedwacker and hit one of the baby ice cream bananas and chopped it 3/4 of the way off. But in just a few days a new leaf has started to grow out. These are a few shots of the ice cream and its babies. Then we have the apple banana which is about to finish a new leaf, the williams hybrid which is the little guy, and finally the misi luki which still has not shot any new shoots yet and is almost twice the size of the ice cream. Here is the link to the first shots of the bananas. http://anotherfortpierceyard.blogspot.com/2008/01/here-are-few-of-baby-bananas-i-have-in.html
