Saturday Aaron and myself went back to the Variegated Sea Grape or Coccoloba uvifera 'Albo-variegata' and came equipped with a kit for air layering a few branches. We began by picking branches around 12", then with the trusty pocketknife we skinned about 3" of the bark off the base of the branch. Then with some water and root stimulator we soaked spaghnum moss, and also added rooting hormone powder to the area that we skinned. Taking the spaghnum moss we packed it around the skinned area. Next we took a piece of plastic and wrapped the branch and spaghnum moss tightly and secured each end closed with twisty ties. Finally we took a black plastic bag and wrapped the branch one more time and sealed bot ends of that with some twisty ties. After about 30 minutes of skinning and wrapping we managed to get 6 branches air layered. Hopefully we will comeback in a few months and have bags full of roots growing off of these branches. Here are the pictures of the Variegated Sea Grape.

Variegated Sea Grape 'Albo-variegata', Coccoloba uvifera Found!
After a long search and looking at hundreds of Sea Grapes it has finally been located. The infamous Coccoloba uvifera 'Albo-variegata'. Over the weekend a friend invited Aaron and myself on a expedition on his property. After an hour of wondering around it was almost like a glow was coming off of this tree ahead of us. And to our amazement there it was in all its glory. My friend told us that we could have a few sticks and I also collected some Sea Grapes off of the tree. I am in the process of cleaning the seeds and getting them started. I am very amped on these we will se how many actually come up showing any variegation. Here are my pictures. The first shows Aaron standing next to it for scale.

Coccoloba uvifera 'Albo-variegata' Variegated Sea Grape
My first post for the new plants is on this Coccoloba uvifera ' Albo-variegata ' or Variegated Sea Grape . It has been top on my list of wants. But it is very expensive for just a small clipping. I have seen them for as much as $95 for a piece that is only 2 ft tall. 1 of the vendors had 2 very nice size Variegated Sea Grapes for $50 each. After lots of though Aaron and myself decided to split it. So we pooled together $48 and she took it. Now we will let it grow and then divide it. Today the lady told us if we would like we can bring it down to her propagation house and she would divide it for us if we wanted for free. Aaron does have a several normal Sea Grapes in the yard so we are going to practice on some of those first and see if we can be successful at propagating them are selves. Here are some pictures of this infamous Coccoloba uvifera ' Albo - variegata ' Variegated Sea Grape .
