Orchids Mounted on Palm Tree Slabs

I have been growing a variety of orchids on pieces of palm trees that I have collected. I have found that the orchids thrive on the palms. Some have attached themselves in as short as 30 days, and others 90+ days. As of right now the first mounted orchid is growing 2 spikes. This Encyclia tampensis was laying on the ground at my property. An old branch had fallen and I grabbed it before any of the hogs could get them. That was a few months ago. And it is growing like crazy. Already attached to he palm it has lots of new growth and the 2 spikes. And I also have a few others that have some new growths but no spikes yet. 1 is another Encyclia tampensis and the other is an unknown waiting for a flower to ID.

  1. Orchids love palm trees it seems. I grow a lot of them on my coconut trees and you can make out that the orchids are happy. Just one problem though, falling nuts and leaves can chop off huge chunks of your orchid so your way of growing them on slabs may be better, I think. But then with the coconut tree, my orchids are almost tie-and-go.

  2. Great site! Lots of great pictures...I too have been recently bitten by the " Palm bug" Found some neglected plams in a pot at a grage sale, and now can't get enough info looking for resources, and starting my own seeds! I'm sure we all are scanning the neighborhood for seeds as we drive around in our daily lives. There's a huge bunch of pindo palm seeds that are almost ready just around the corner...haha

  3. That is a great use for old palms. I see them dumped all the time. Hopefully some people will get a few good ideas from your photographs.
